Verse 2 of 5

Small, and Still Safe, Held by Something Kinder

ਤੁਮਰਾ ਮਰਮੁ ਤੁਮਾ ਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਤੁਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ॥
tumraa maram tumaa hee jaani-aa tum pooran purakh biDhaatay.
You alone know Your mystery; You are the Perfect Architect of Destiny.
ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਦੀਨ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਗਾਤੇ ॥੧॥
raakho saran anaath deen ka-o karahu hamaaree gaatay. ||1||
I am a helpless orphan - please keep me under Your Protection and save me. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Only You know Your own secret — You are the perfect Maker of all that is.

Keep me safe in Your shelter, a small one with no other support, and lift me up.

You can be small and still be safe, held by something far bigger and kinder than yourself.
The deeper layer

Tumraa maram tumaa hee jaani-aa — 'only You know Your own maram, Your mystery' — the unknowable vastness motif once more. Tum pooran purakh bidhaatay — the perfect shaping Presence. Then the trusting request: raakho saran anaath deen ka-o — 'keep the anaath (one with no other support) and deen (the humble, lowly one) in Your shelter,' karahu hamaaree gaatay — 'and raise me up / grant me release' (gaatay, deliverance). Deen — lowliness — is held as empty-handed humility toward grace, the trusting smallness of a child, not shame.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt safest — and what made you feel that way?
