That day, when the Giver of life and peace is forgotten - that day passes uselessly. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, in the shelter of the Oneness there is real peace. And any day I let the Giver of life and peace slip out of mind, that day just drifts by. It is spent on nothing that lasts.

A day spent remembering what matters is a day that isn't wasted.
The deeper layer

A day spent remembering the One is a day that feels full.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the idea the other verses circle. Saran prabhoo sukh paa-ay — peace is found in the shelter of the One.

Jaa din bisrai ... so din jaat ajaa-ay — the day the Giver of life and peace is forgotten passes ajaa-ay, in vain.

This is not meant to make anyone feel guilty. It is an invitation to notice. Some days feel full and some feel empty, like a day of scrolling that leaves you tired and with nothing to show. Remembering the One is what fills a day up.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a day feel truly well-spent to you?
