Perfect Words Without Understanding Stay on the Surface

ਚਤੁਰ ਬੇਦ ਮੁਖ ਬਚਨੀ ਉਚਰੈ ਆਗੈ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
chatur bayd mukh bachnee uchrai aagai mahal na paa-ee-ai.
Reciting the four Vedas from memory, they do not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence hereafter.
ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਏਕੁ ਸੁਧਾਖਰੁ ਓਹੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਝਾਖ ਝਖਾਈਐ ॥੩॥
boojhai naahee ayk suDhaakhar oh saglee jhaakh jhakhaa-ee-ai. ||3||
Those who do not understand the One Pure Word, utter total nonsense. ||3||

In plain words

A person may recite whole scriptures perfectly from memory and still not arrive at the inner home. Missing the one true, living word, all the reciting drifts like scattered talk.

Perfect words without real understanding stay on the surface; the heart's grasp opens the door.
The deeper layer

Saying perfect words without understanding them keeps you on the surface.

Chatur bayd mukh bachnee uchrai — someone recites the four Vedas from memory. The Vedas are ancient Hindu scriptures. Yet aagai mahal na paa-ee-ai — they do not reach the mahal, the palace of the One's presence, deep inside.

Why not? Boojhai naahee ayk sudhaakhar — they do not understand the one pure word. Sudhaakhar is the pure word, the living heart of the teaching. Recitation alone can miss it.

This is not against scripture. The Vedas are treated with respect here. The point is that memorized words without understanding stay on the surface. Think of singing along to every word of a song in another language without knowing what it means. Understanding, not performance, is what opens the door.

A Question to Sit With

Can you know a poem or prayer by heart and still miss what it truly means?
