The One Is the Source; the Lucky Turn Is Remembering

ਭੁਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਾ ਕਾਰਨੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੂੜ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਵੈ ॥
bhugat mukat kaa kaaran su-aamee moorh taahi bisraavai.
Our Lord and Master is the source of pleasures and liberation; and yet, the fool forgets Him.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਕੋਊ ਭਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥
jan naanak kotan mai ko-oo bhajan raam ko paavai. ||2||3||
O servant Nanak, among millions, there is scarcely anyone who attains the Lord's meditation. ||2||3||

In plain words

The One is the source of every real joy and of true freedom. And yet how easily the mind lets that slip, and looks everywhere else.

Out of millions upon millions of people, only a rare one turns and remembers, and drinks in that closeness.

The One is the source of every real joy, yet we look everywhere else; the rare, blessed turn is a remembering that lasts.
The deeper layer

The One is the source of every real joy, yet we look everywhere else. The lucky turn is to remember, and keep remembering.

Bhugat mukat kaa kaaran su-aamee — the Master is the source of both joy and freedom. Bhugat means the good things we enjoy. Mukat means freedom of the soul. So all our searching is a little funny. We hunt everywhere for what is already at the source. Think of looking all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head.

Moorh taahi bisraavai — the foolish mind forgets Him. Moorh means foolish. It points to the forgetful mind we all share, not to a bad person.

Kotan mai ko-oo — one in millions. This is not meant to discourage anyone. It shows how easily attention drifts. The rare one has not just made a quick decision. In that person, turning toward the One has slowly ripened, by grace, into remembering that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

If the thing you were searching for was right where you started, how long might it take you to notice?
