Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 243
Verse 4 of 9

Chasing Comfort Strings a Garland of Trouble

ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗਲ ਹੋਇ ॥
sukh maaNgat dukh aagal ho-ay.
People beg for peace, but they receive severe pain.
ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥
sagal vikaaree haar paro-ay.
They are all weaving a wreath of corruption.
ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
ayk binaa jhoothay mukat na ho-ay.
You are false - without the One, there is no liberation.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kar kar kartaa daykhai so-ay. ||3||
The Creator created the creation, and He watches over it. ||3||

In plain words

Beg only for comfort, and hardship often waits right behind it.

Chasing only the surface, people string together a whole garland of trouble.

Apart from the One, nothing shaky ever sets you truly free.

The Maker made all this, and the Maker watches over it with care.

Chasing only comfort strings together a garland of trouble; nothing shaky can free you, but the Maker watches over all.
The deeper layer

This one says that chasing only comfort brings trouble along behind it.

The line begins, "begging for comfort, dukh aagal ho-ay," which means "pain stands waiting in front." Grabbing at ease breeds unease.

Sagal vikaaree haar paro-ay — "all are threading a garland of troubles." A haar is a garland, like a string of flowers. Here each bead is another trouble, strung one after another.

Think of a kid who wants only the fun part of every day. They skip the practice, the homework, the chores. Soon the missed things pile up into one long string of stress.

Ayk binaa jhoothay mukat na ho-ay — "without the One, what is false cannot set you free." Jhooth means what does not last. Mukat means freedom.

Then the verse ends in comfort, not blame. Kar kar kartaa daykhai so-ay — "the Maker made it all, and watches over it." The One is present and paying attention.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how chasing only the easy thing sometimes leads straight into a harder one?
