Pride Is Heavy; the Teaching Lifts It Away

ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
aisaa garab buraa sansaarai.
Such is the horrible pride of the world.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis gur milai tis garab nivaarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru eliminates the pride of those who meet Him. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Pride is a heavy, unhappy thing to carry through the world. But when someone meets the teaching, that pride is gently lifted away.

Pride is a heavy thing to carry; the teaching gently lifts it away.
The deeper layer

The Rahao — the comp’s key. Aisaa garab buraa sansaarai — such is the burdensome pride of the world. Jis gur milai tis garab nivaarai — meeting the Guru removes it. The whole litany of figures exists to illustrate this one line: pride weighs a life down, and the teaching lifts it. Ego is a disease to heal, not a crime.

A Question to Sit With

What is a “pride” you carry that might actually feel lighter to set down?
