Verse 8 of 13

Every Old Story Runs One Thread: He Protects the Faithful

ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
jaraasanDh kaalajmun sanghaaray.
The demons Jaraa-sandh and Kaal-jamun were destroyed.
ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
rakatbeej kaalunaym bidaaray.
Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated.
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
dait sanghaar sant nistaaray. ||7||
Slaying the demons, the Lord saved His Saints. ||7||

In plain words

Jaraasandh and Kaaljamun were brought down.

Raktbeej and Kaalnaym were undone.

The One undid the harmful and carried His saints, the loving and the faithful, safely through.

Through every old story runs one thread: the One protects the loving and the faithful.
The deeper layer

Through every old story runs one thread: the One protects the good.

This verse lists more figures from the old tales: Jaraasandh, Kaaljamun, Raktbeej and Kaalnaym. Each one caused harm, and each one was brought down.

But look at the last line: dait sanghaar sant nistaaray — the harmful are undone, and the saints are carried across. Sant means saints, the loving and faithful. Nistaaray means carried safely over.

So the list is not really about destruction. It ends in protection for the good. Think of a rescue story. What we remember is not the storm but the people who were brought home safe. The old stories are told with respect, as carriers of a lesson.

A Question to Sit With

When you hear a story where the bad guy loses, what is it really trying to teach?
