Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

So what should I put on? What outfit could I show off? Without the One who holds the whole universe, where would peace even come from?

Without the One who holds the universe, no outfit brings real peace.
The deeper layer

No outfit in the world can bring peace without the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Ki-aa pahira-o ki-aa odh dikhaava-o — what should I wear? What should I show off? Bin jagdees kahaa sukh paava-o — without Jagdees, the Lord of the universe, where will I find sukh, peace?

The pause turns the whole shabad from things to how empty they are without the One. It asks us to feel the question for ourselves. Think of standing in front of a full closet and still feeling, "I have nothing to wear." The real emptiness is somewhere else.

A Question to Sit With

When do you catch yourself dressing or acting to impress others?
