Verse 7 of 9

A Heart With No Anchor Is Never Satisfied

ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥
ji-o tan biDhvaa par ka-o day-ee.
The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥
kaam daam chit par vas say-ee.
she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
bin pir taripat na kabahooN ho-ee. ||6||
, but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||

In plain words

A heart with no anchor gives itself away to whatever passes by.

It lets itself be pulled this way and that by wanting and gain.

And it is never truly satisfied, because it has not yet found the One it really longs for.

A heart with no anchor is pulled about and never satisfied, until it finds the One it longs for.
The deeper layer

A heart that has not found its true Beloved keeps chasing things, and nothing ever fills it.

The verse uses a sad picture from its own time: a widow left all alone, pulled this way and that by others. The teaching inside it is about every heart. Kaam daam chit par vas say-ee — the mind is ruled by wanting and money. Bin pir taripat na kabahooN ho-ee — without the pir, the Beloved, there is never true contentment.

Think of scrolling for an hour, looking for something to watch, and nothing feels right. What you really wanted was to talk to your best friend. The heart longs for its true Beloved, the One, and only that meeting can satisfy it.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between wanting lots of things and truly longing for one?
