Like the Rain-Bird for a Drop, Drink in the One

ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
ji-o chaatrik jal paraym pi-aasaa.
As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
ji-o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa.
and as the fish delights in the water,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
naanak har ras pee tariptaasaa. ||8||11||
Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

In plain words

The rain-bird thirsts with its whole heart for a single drop of rain.

The fish comes alive in the water.

In the same way, Nanak drinks in the taste of the One and is finally, fully satisfied.

Like the rain-bird thirsting for a drop, drink in the One and be truly satisfied.
The deeper layer

After all the cravings that never fill up, the shabad ends with a thirst that is finally answered.

It gives two gentle pictures. The chaatrik is the rain-bird, which longs for a single drop of rain. The fish comes alive in the water. Naanak har ras pee tariptaasaa — Nanak drinks the taste of the One and is full.

Think of coming in from a hot soccer game and drinking cold water. That is what being filled feels like. The shabad has shown many kinds of wanting that never stop. Here, at the end, is the one thirst that is met.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing that, when you have it, makes everything feel enough?
