Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 254
Verse 3 of 10

The Deepest Sweetness Is Drunk Within

ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅਉ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
api-o pee-a-o akath kath rahee-ai.
So, drink deeply of this Nectar, and speak the Unspoken Speech.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
nij ghar bais sahj ghar lahee-ai.
Dwelling in the home of your own being within, you shall find the home of intuitive peace.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੨॥
har ras maatay ih sukh kahee-ai. ||2||
One who is imbued with the Lord's sublime essence, is said to experience this peace. ||2||

In plain words

Drink deeply of this quiet, wordless sweetness, and you begin to speak of things too beautiful for ordinary words.

Resting in the home of your own being, you find a natural, easy peace.

To be soaked in the One's sweetness is the joy I mean.

The deepest sweetness is drunk within, and it settles you into an easy, natural peace.
The deeper layer

The deepest sweetness is found inside, in the home of your own being.

Api-o pee-a-o — drink the nectar. Akath kath rahee-ai — speak the unspoken, the part of life too big for words.

Nij ghar means the home of your own being. The peace you look for is found within. Settling there, you reach sahj ghar, the home of sahj, natural ease. Har ras maatay — soaked in the One's sweetness. That, the verse says, is sukh, deep peace.

Think of searching the whole neighborhood for your cat, then finding her asleep on your own bed. This is Guru Nanak's turn inward. The treasure is closer than any journey.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt so much quiet joy that words did not quite fit it?
