Verse 9 of 9

The True One Never Comes or Goes; Rest There

ਸਾਚਾ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
saachaa marai na aavai jaa-ay.
The True Lord does not die; He does not come or go.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh rahai samaa-ay. ||8||1||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh remains absorbed in the Lord. ||8||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The True One never dies, never comes and never goes — it simply, always, is. And Nanak says: the heart that turns toward the teaching rests, absorbed and at home, in that unchanging One.

The True One never comes or goes; turn toward the teaching and rest, at home, in that unchanging One.
The deeper layer

The True One never comes or goes, and the one who faces the teaching rests there.

Saachaa marai na aavai jaa-ay — the True One does not die, and does not come or go. The confused mind keeps coming and going. Here is the One that never moves. Naanak gurmukh rahai samaa-ay — Nanak says the gurmukh, the one facing the teaching, rests absorbed in that One.

This whole song has been about sootak, being "unclean." Now we see what true cleanness is. It is melting into the One that was never stained, never born, never lost. Think of a raindrop falling into the ocean. It is home. This song is the first in a set of eight-verse songs, called ashtapadees, by Guru Amar Das.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to rest in something that will never leave and never change?
