Live by the Teaching and Your Actions Grow True

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh karam Dharam sach ho-ee.
Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥
gurmukh ahaNkaar jalaa-ay do-ee.
The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.

gurmukh naam ratay sukh ho-ee. ||3||
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||

In plain words

Living by the teaching, our actions and our sense of right grow genuinely true. The ego and the feeling of being separate burn gently away. Colored by the Name, the heart settles into peace.

Live by the teaching and your actions grow true, separateness melts, and peace settles in.
The deeper layer

This one says: live by the teaching, and your actions become real.

Gurmukh karam Dharam sach ho-ee — for the gurmukh, karam, action, and Dharam, right living, become sach. Sach means real and true. They are not just a show.

Gurmukh ahaNkaar jalaa-ay do-ee — ahaNkaar and do-ee burn away. AhaNkaar is pride. Do-ee means "two-ness," the feeling of being separate from the One and from others. This burning is a warm picture, not a punishment. It is like frost melting on a window when the sun comes up.

Gurmukh naam ratay sukh ho-ee — dyed in the Name, one lives in sukh, peace. Good action, the melting of separateness, and peace all flow from the same turning toward the teaching.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good action that feels completely real to you, not just something you do for show?
