Sing the Song That Stays With You All the Way Home

ਐਸਾ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

O my mind, sing such Praises of the Lord,
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਜੋ ਕਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

which shall be of use to you here and hereafter. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O my mind, sing the kind of song that truly stays with you. It is worth something here, and everywhere your journey leads.

Sing the song that actually stays with you -- worth something here and all the way home.
The deeper layer

This one says: sing the kind of song that stays with you all the way.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, its beating heart. Aisaa keertan kar man mayray — O my mind, sing such praise. Keertan is singing the One's praises, a practice at the heart of Sikhi.

What kind of praise? Eehaa oohaa jo kaam tayrai — the kind that helps you here and hereafter, in this life and beyond it. Think of a song your family sings on every long car trip. It comes with you wherever you go.

So the invitation is warm: sing the song that goes all the way with you. The long list of "remembering Him" lines that follows answers what that song is.

A Question to Sit With

What is a song, or a set of words, that steadies you no matter where you are?
