Hold the One and the Urges Come Under Command

ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਵਸਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਪੰਚਾ ॥
jaas japat vas aavahi panchaa.
Meditating on Him, the five passions are overcome.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੰਚਾ ॥
jaas japat ridai amrit sanchaa.
Meditating on Him, Ambrosial Nectar is collected in the heart.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
jaas japat ih tarisnaa bujhai.
Meditating on Him, this desire is quenched.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਝੈ ॥੩॥
jaas japat har dargeh sijhai. ||3||
Meditating on Him, one is approved in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Hold the One in mind, and the fierce inner urges that used to run you come under your own gentle command; a sweetness gathers in your heart.

Hold the One in mind, and the endless thirst for more grows quiet; you find you already belong.

Hold the One in mind and the urges that ran you come under gentle command, and endless thirst goes quiet.
The deeper layer

This one says that remembering the One brings the strong inner urges under control and quenches the thirst for more.

Jaas japat vas aavahi panchaa — remembering Him, the five come under control. The panchaa, the five, are strong inner pulls. They are often named as lust, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. They are not crushed. They are outgrown, the way you outgrow a toy you once could not put down.

Ridai amrit sanchaa — amrit, the sweet nectar of the One, collects in the heart. Tarisnaa bujhai — tarisnaa, the thirst for more, is quenched, like cool water on a hot day.

Then dargeh sijhai — one is approved in the Court, the dargeh. This is less like passing a judge's test and more like belonging. It is the feeling of being at home in the whole.

A Question to Sit With

What is one strong feeling that gets easier to handle when you slow down and breathe?
