Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A steadiness like that grows in a person the way a plant grows in good soil -- gently, on its own.
It comes to the heart that grace has touched with kindness.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It names the key word: steadiness.
Aisee darirh-taa taa kai ho-ay — such steadiness comes to that person. Darirh-taa means being firmly rooted, planted deep, stable.
Where does it come from? Not from our own striving. Jaa ka-o da-i-aa ma-i-aa parabh so-ay — it comes to the one on whom God's da-i-aa (compassion) and ma-i-aa (kindness, grace) rest. Steadiness is not something you squeeze tight with willpower. It is received. It is the natural calm of a heart that grace has softened.
Think of a plant in good soil. You don't pull on it to make it grow. It grows on its own.
This sets up everything that follows in the shabad: sahaj, ease, not effort.
Is there a calm in you that feels less like trying hard and more like being at peace?
