Verse 7 of 9

Remembrance Loosens the Knots of Restless Wanting

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੂਕਰ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ ॥
bin simran kookar harkaa-i-aa.
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a mad dog.
ਸਾਕਤ ਲੋਭੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
saakat lobhee banDh na paa-i-aa. ||6||
The greedy, faithless cynic falls into entanglements. ||6||

In plain words

Without remembrance, a restless, frantic energy can take over, hard to calm.

Cut off from the One, wanting more and more can tangle us up until we can hardly move -- and remembrance is what loosens the knots.

Without remembrance a restless, never-satisfied energy can tangle us up -- and remembrance is what loosens the knots and calms us.
The deeper layer

Greed ties us in knots, and remembrance loosens them.

Bin simran kookar harkaa-i-aa — without remembrance, a person is like a mad dog. The verse means a frantic, restless energy that is hard to calm. Saakat lobhee bandh na paa-i-aa — the greedy one, cut off from the One, gets tangled up. Lobh is greed, always wanting more.

Greed is like a necklace chain in your pocket. The more you move, the more it knots. It is something anyone can recognize: restlessness, and the trap of "more."

Remembrance is the loosening, the calm. Greed and ego are things to heal, not crimes to condemn.

A Question to Sit With

When wanting 'more and more' takes over, does it ever feel like being tied in knots?
