A Deeper Hunger Than the Body's Needs the Name

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
naam binaa jo pahirai khaa-ay.
Without the Naam, one who dresses and eats well
ਜਿਉ ਕੂਕਰੁ ਜੂਠਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
ji-o kookar joothan meh paa-ay. ||1||
is like a dog, who falls in and eats impure foods. ||1||

In plain words

If I chase only fine clothes and good food and forget the Name, I'm missing what really nourishes me. I'm feeding the body while the deeper hunger goes unfed.

Fine clothes and good food feed the body, but a deeper hunger needs the Name.
The deeper layer

Fine clothes and good food feed the body, but there is a deeper hunger only the Name can fill.

Naam binaa jo pahirai khaa-ay — without the Name, someone who dresses up and eats well. Ji-o kookar joothan meh paa-ay — is like a dog poking into leftover scraps. The picture is strong on purpose. The point it carries is simple. Outer comforts alone leave a deeper hunger unfed.

Think of eating only candy all day. Your stomach feels full, but your body is still hungry for real food. The contrast is between surface food and real food. It is not meant to shame anyone.

A Question to Sit With

What is a hunger inside you that no snack or new thing can ever fill?
