Understanding Is a Lamp; Once Lit, the Dark Lifts

ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
agi-aan anDhayraa mit ga-i-aa gur gi-aan deepaa-i-o. ||2||
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled; the Guru has lit the lamp of spiritual wisdom. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The darkness of not-knowing lifted right off me.

The teaching lit a lamp of understanding, and suddenly the room of my mind was bright.

Understanding is a lamp — the moment it's lit, the dark simply lifts.
The deeper layer

This one says that understanding is a lamp. Once it is lit, the dark lifts.

Agi-aan anDhayraa mit ga-i-aa — the darkness of agi-aan, not-knowing, is gone. Gur gi-aan deepaa-i-o — the Guru has lit the lamp of gi-aan, wisdom.

Think of walking into a dark room and flipping on the light. You don't have to fight the dark. It just leaves. The shabad just before this one uses the same lamp picture.

Not-knowing is treated here as a darkness that lifts, not a fault to be blamed.

A Question to Sit With

When has understanding something finally made a confusing dark feeling go bright?
