You Don't Need a Perfect Record; Grace Reaches You

ਨਾ ਹਮ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਧਰਮ ਸੁਚ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਆਪਾਇਓ ॥੪॥
naa ham karam na Dharam such parabh geh bhujaa aapaa-i-o. ||4||
I have no good karma; I have no Dharmic faith or purity. But God has taken me by the arm, and made me His own. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I had no special good deeds to show, no perfect record, no ritual purity — and it didn't matter. The One simply took me by the arm and made me family, just as I was.

The one who claims no merit is met with mercy — a refuge no record could earn.
The deeper layer

This one says you do not need a perfect record. Grace reaches you anyway.

Naa ham karam na Dharam such — I have no good deeds, no Dharam, no purity to show. Parabh geh bhujaa aapaa-i-o — God took me by the arm and made me His own.

This is the heart of the shabad: grace comes to the empty-handed. It is not about putting yourself down. It is about coming with open, empty hands and finding mercy anyway, a refuge you did not have to earn. Think of a child who runs to a parent with nothing to offer but a hug. The parent scoops them up all the same.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been welcomed somewhere even though you felt you hadn't 'earned' it?
