Listen, dear friends — let's join together and make the effort to draw close to the One we love.
Setting our pride aside, let's win the One over with the sweet pull of devotion and the good counsel of gentle, wise people.
Friends, once the One comes close, that closeness never leaves again — that is simply the good nature of the One.
The One quiets the fear of growing old, of endings, of every dark place, and makes each being new and whole.
Friends are calling each other to come closer to the One, together.
This is a chhant, a joyful song in verses. It is spoken among sakhee, friends who cheer each other on toward the One. That is what makes it lovely. The spiritual life here is not a lonely climb. It is something friends do side by side. Mil udam karayhaa — let's make the effort together.
Only one thing is asked. Maan ti-aag — set your pride aside.
The word thag-uree means a charming potion, something that wins a heart. Here it stands for the sweet pull of devotion. Love itself draws the heart, gently, and it is hard to resist. Think of how a friend's laugh can pull you into a game you meant to skip.
The last line brings deep comfort. Jaraa maran bhai narak nivaarai — the One takes away the fear of growing old, of dying, and of narak, the darkest place there is. Those fears are quieted, and each being is made new and whole.
Who are the friends who help you become your best self, and how do you help each other?
