In plain words

Friends, every day I wish for the One and pray for that closeness; may my hopes be fulfilled.

I thirst for the One's presence and long to see it — I look for it everywhere I go.

I search out traces of the One in the company of good people; they help lead me to the all-powerful One.

Those who meet the One, the giver of peace, are truly blessed, dear mother — the most fortunate of all.

Sometimes the way to what you're seeking runs straight through good company.
The deeper layer

Longing turns into searching, and good company helps the searcher find the way.

The soul is charan pi-aasee, daras bairaagan — thirsty to be near the One, aching for a glimpse. It looks everywhere, paykha-o thaan sabaa-ay, because the One fills every place.

But the real help comes through har sant janaa sang, the company of good and holy people. Other people walking the same road are the ones who "unite me with the One." This is the teaching of the Sangat, the company of good people. We find the One not alone, but with and through one another. Think of a hiking group where the people ahead call back, "This way!"

The singer calls out maa-ay, "O mother." It sounds like a girl telling her mother her deepest hope. That warm, trusting voice is the point. It is not about being a girl or a boy.

A Question to Sit With

Has a good friend or a good group ever helped lead you toward something you were searching for?
