You could be the most handsome person in the room. You could be born into a famous family, brilliant, admired by everyone, and rich beyond counting.
But if there is no love for the One in you, life still feels strangely empty, as if something is missing at the very center. Love for the One is what makes a life truly alive.
A life can have everything the world admires and still feel empty; love for the One is what makes it truly alive.
The Shalok lists what the world ranks people by. At sundar kuleen chatur mukh nyi-aanee Dhanvant — very good-looking, from a respected family, clever, a famous teacher, and rich. Then it quietly takes all five away as the measure of a real life.
Its image is blunt. Mirtak kahee-ahi naankaa — such a person is called mirtak, lifeless, if they have no pareet, love, for the One. It is a picture of being hollow and empty inside. The point is not to condemn. It is to name what is missing, the way a doctor names what is wrong so it can be healed.
Think of a beautiful house with every light switched off. The one thing left that really matters is pareet, love. This verse makes everyone level. None of the outside advantages count, and the one thing that does count is open to anyone.
What is something that looks impressive from the outside but can feel empty on the inside without love in it?
