Verse 35 of 112

The Maker Makes No Mistakes; Trust What Comes

pavrhee.
Pauree:
kakaa kaaran kartaa so-oo.
KAKKA: He is the Creator, the Cause of causes.
likhi-o laykh na maytat ko-oo.
No one can erase His pre-ordained plan.
nahee hot kachh do-oo baaraa.
Nothing can be done a second time.
karnaihaar na bhoolanhaaraa.
The Creator Lord does not make mistakes.
kaahoo panth dikhaarai aapai.
To some, He Himself shows the Way.
kaahoo udi-aan bharmat pachhutaapai.
While He causes others to wander miserably in the wilderness.
aapan khayl aap hee keeno.
He Himself has set His own play in motion.
jo jo deeno so naanak leeno. ||17||
Whatever He gives, O Nanak, that is what we receive. ||17||

In plain words

The One is the Maker, the beginning behind every beginning. What has been set in motion cannot be crossed out or done over — and the Maker never makes a mistake.

To some, the Way shows itself plainly. Others wander a long time before they find it. It is all one great unfolding play, set in motion by the One.

Whatever comes to you, comes from that same source. Trust it: you are receiving exactly what is being given.

The One is the Maker behind every beginning and makes no mistakes — so whatever comes to you, you can trust you are receiving what is truly being given.
The deeper layer

The One is the Maker behind every beginning and makes no mistakes, so whatever comes to you comes from the Giver.

This is the verse for the letter Kakka. Kakaa kaaran kartaa so-oo — He is the Creator, the Cause of causes. That is a classic Sikh name for the One: the start behind every chain of starts. Think of the first domino that sets off a whole long line.

The verse is firm. Likhi-o laykh na maytat ko-oo — no one can erase what has been written. Karnaihaar na bhoolanhaaraa — the Maker makes no mistakes.

Then a harder line. Kaahoo panth dikhaarai aapai — to some, the One shows the Way. Kaahoo udi-aan bharmat pachhutaapai — others wander in the wild and are sorry. Some find the way quickly, and some wander a long time first. The paths are different. That is honest, and it is no reason to lose hope.

What makes sense of it is aapan khayl aap hee keeno — He set His own play in motion. The whole thing is Hukam, the flow of existence, not a cruel lottery. The close is jo jo deeno so naanak leeno — whatever He gives, that is what we receive. This is mannai, acceptance, rather than giving up.

A Question to Sit With

If the Maker never makes a mistake, how might that change the way you meet something you didn’t choose or wouldn’t have picked?
