O Nanak, may I never forget from my mind, the Treasure of Virtue, the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. ||1||

In plain words

The tug-of-war of coming and going, holding on and letting go, quiets into peace when you serve the holy people.

Nanak asks: may I always keep in mind the One who holds every good thing — the true heart of the whole universe. That remembering is what steadies me.

Serving the holy people quiets the inner tug-of-war — and always keeping the One in mind is what steadies you.
The deeper layer

The fruit of serving the saadh — the holy people. Tootay bandhan janam maran — the "bondage of birth and death" (the wheel of coming and going) is broken by saadh sayv, serving the holy: the calming of an inner tug-of-war. "May I never forget" means may I always keep in mind the gun nidh — the Treasure of Virtue, gobid raa-ay, the Sovereign of the universe. Serving the holy and holding the One in mind: two halves of one steadying practice.

A Question to Sit With

Have you felt a kind of peace come from working together with good people toward something that matters?
