Third Mehl:
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
ha-umai jagat bhulaa-i-aa durmat bikhi-aa bikaar.
Egotism has led the world astray, along with evil-mindedness and the poison of corruption.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਿਆਰ ॥
satgur milai ta nadar ho-ay manmukh anDh anDhi-aar.
Meeting with the True Guru, we are blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace, while the self-willed manmukh gropes around in the darkness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਾਏ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥
naanak aapay mayl la-ay jis no sabad laa-ay pi-aar. ||3||
O Nanak, the Lord absorbs into Himself those whom He inspires to love the Word of His Shabad. ||3||

In plain words

Ego has led the world in circles — ego (haumai — the feeling that you are a separate self), and the confusion and harm that follow it.

Meet the True Guru, and a glance of grace reaches you; without it, the restless mind stumbles in the dark.

Nanak says: the One gathers close all those in whom love for the Word has been awakened.

Ego walks us in circles in the dark; the moment we turn toward the Guru, the light that was always there simply reaches us.
The deeper layer

A short, potent Shalok of the Third Mehl. It names haumai (ego) as the thing that leads the whole world astray — not as a crime to punish but as a kind of dizziness, walking in circles. The remedy is not effort but meeting: satgur milai ta nadar ho-ay — meet the True Guru, and the glance of grace is simply there, always was. The manmukh (self-directed, restless mind) is described as groping in darkness — an image of confusion, not condemnation. The closing line reframes everything as grace: the One draws close those in whom love has been awakened. You do not earn the light; you become open to it.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt stuck or turned-around? What finally helped you see clearly again?
