O Nanak, praising the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind and body are cooled and soothed. ||1||

In plain words

Standing up, sitting down, or lying down to sleep — you can rest in a quiet ease all the way through.

Nanak says: praising the Name, mind and body grow cool and settled, like heat lifting off in the evening.

Peace is a cool calm you can carry through standing, sitting, and sleeping.
The deeper layer

A tiny, tender Shalok that spreads peace across the whole ordinary day: uthandi-aa bahandi-aa suvandiaa — "while rising, sitting, sleeping" — sukh so-ay, be at ease through all of it. The teaching isn't reserved for a special posture or a special hour; it soaks into the plainest motions of living. The image in the second line is physical and lovely: seetal ho-ay, "cooled" — man tan, mind and body. When something true is held steadily, the whole system settles the way ground cools once the sun goes down. Peace here is a temperature.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small, ordinary moment in your day where you could invite a little more calm?
