Love Makes Ordinary Things Gleam Like Dew

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
Dharan suvannee kharh ratan jarhaavee har paraym purakh man vuthaa.
Like the beautiful earth, adorned with jewels of grass - such is the mind, within which the Love of the Lord abides.
ਸਭੇ ਕਾਜ ਸੁਹੇਲੜੇ ਥੀਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ॥੧॥
sabhay kaaj suhaylrhay thee-ay gur naanak satgur tuthaa. ||1||
All one's affairs are easily resolved, O Nanak, when the Guru, the True Guru, is pleased. ||1||

In plain words

Like the earth made beautiful, sparkling with dew on the grass like jewels — such is the heart where love for the One has come to live.

Nanak says: every task falls into place with ease, when the Guru, the True Guru, is pleased and smiling.

Love makes ordinary things gleam like dew on grass — and a lit-up heart meets its tasks with ease.
The deeper layer

A single glowing image. Dharan suvannee kharh ratan jarhaavee — "the earth, beautiful, its grass set with jewels" (dew catching light like gems). That is what a heart looks like from the inside when har praym pura-kh man vuthaa, "the love of the One has settled in it." Love makes ordinary things gleam. And from that inner spring comes outer ease: sabhay kaaj suhaylrhay thee-ay — "all affairs become easy, smooth" — sat-gur tuthaa, when the True Guru is "pleased." Not that problems vanish, but that a heart lit up from within meets its tasks differently — dew-jeweled instead of dust-gray.

A Question to Sit With

When you're happy inside, do ordinary things look different to you? What looks brightest when you feel good?
