Praising Beats Any Pilgrimage

pa-orhee.
Pauree:
rasnaa uchrai har sarvanee sunai so uDhrai mitaa.
Those who chant the Lord's Name with their tongues and hear it with their ears are saved, O my friend.
har jas likheh laa-ay bhaavnee say hasat pavitaa.
Those hands which lovingly write the Praises of the Lord are pure.
athsath tirath majnaa sabh punn tin kitaa.
It is like performing all sorts of virtuous deeds, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
sansaar saagar tay uDhray bikhi-aa garh jitaa.
They cross over the world-ocean, and conquer the fortress of corruption.
naanak larh laa-ay uDhaari-an da-yu sayv amitaa. ||19||
O Nanak, serve the Infinite Lord; grasp the hem of His robe, and He will save you. ||19||

In plain words

Whoever speaks the One's praise with their tongue and hears it with their ears is lifted up, my friend.

Hands that lovingly write the One's goodness become pure.

It is like doing every good deed and bathing at all the sacred places at once.

Such people cross the wide world safely and win past what would trap them — the One takes their hand and carries them across.

Tongue, ears, and hands all praising is worth more than any pilgrimage — and the One carries you across.
The deeper layer

A Pauri that blesses the body's participation in goodness. Rasnaa uchrai (the tongue speaks it), sarvanee sunai (the ears hear it), hasat... pavitaa (the hands that write it become pure) — mouth, ears, hands all drawn into praise. Then the great leveling comparison: this is worth athsath tirath majnaa, "bathing at the sixty-eight pilgrimage-sites," and sabh punn, "every virtuous deed" — inner devotion equal to and beyond the whole outer machinery of merit, in any tradition. The close is the Vaar's recurring rescue image: larh laa-ay udhaari-an — the One "attaches them to the hem and carries them across," bikhi-aa garh ji-taa, past the "fortress" of what would trap them. Not their own strength; the One's hand.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you can do with your hands, your voice, and your attention all at once?
