Verse 5 of 5

What Frees You Is Keeping the One Alive Within

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਨਰ ਭਾਈ ॥
kaho kabeer sunhu nar bhaa-ee.
Says Kabir, listen, O men, O Siblings of Destiny:
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥
raam naam bin kin gat paa-ee. ||4||4||
without the Lord's Name, who has ever found salvation? ||4||4||

In plain words

So listen, friends: without keeping the One in your heart, who has ever truly arrived? Not the costume, not the rule, not the sign — but the living remembrance is what sets you free.

What frees you is not the outward form but keeping the One alive in your heart.
The deeper layer

What frees you is not an outer form. It is keeping the One alive in your heart.

The last verse gathers the whole argument. Raam naam bin kin gat paa-ee — without the Name, who has ever found the way? Kabir speaks to his listeners as nar bhaaee, "friends, brothers." The words are old, but the call is to everyone.

He has gently cleared away the outer forms: no clothes, deer skins, a shaved head, strict rules. Then he names the one thing left. The Naam, the Name, the living remembering of the One. Think of peeling away wrapping paper layer by layer until you reach the gift. And that gift is open to everyone, equally.

A Question to Sit With

Of all the things you do, which ones actually change your heart — and which are just for show?
