Grand Words Don't Settle the Heart; a Softened Ego Does

ਕਹਨ ਕਹਾਵਨ ਨਹ ਪਤੀਅਈ ਹੈ ॥
kahan kahaavan nah patee-a-ee hai.
By mere talk, the mind is not appeased.
ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ta-o man maanai jaa tay ha-umai ja-ee hai. ||2||
The mind is only appeased, when egotism is conquered. ||2||

In plain words

Just repeating grand claims doesn't settle the heart. The heart only truly rests when the "me first" feeling loosens its grip — when the ego that keeps you feeling separate finally softens. That's the real shift.

Grand words don't settle the heart; it's when the me-first ego softens that real peace arrives.
The deeper layer

Big talk cannot settle the heart; the heart settles when the ego softens.

Kahan kahaavan nah patee-a-ee hai — by talking, and getting others to talk, the mind is not satisfied. Then comes the key line. Ta-o man maanai jaa tay ha-umai ja-ee hai — the mind settles only when haumai leaves. Haumai is the ego, the feeling of being a separate "me."

This is the center of the teaching. Peace does not come from claims. It comes when haumai softens. Think of a tight knot in a shoelace. You do not punish the knot. You patiently work it loose. The ego is like that: a knot to loosen, not a crime. Understanding is what does the untying.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of needing to be right or first actually made you feel more at peace?
