Your Real Worth Rests in a Heart Turned to the One

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥
kaho kabeer sunhu ray gunee-aa.
Says Kabir, listen, O virtuous people:
ਬਿਨਸੈਗੋ ਰੂਪੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
binsaigo roop daykhai sabh dunee-aa. ||4||11||
your beauty shall vanish, as the whole world watches. ||4||11||

In plain words

So listen, good people. Kabir says it with love.

Everyone's looks will fade in time, as the whole world watches. That's just how it is.

Since outer looks fade for everyone, your real worth is safe — it rests in a heart turned toward the One.
The deeper layer

This one says your real worth is safe, because it rests in a heart turned toward the One.

Kabir closes by speaking warmly to gunee-aa, "good people." He is not accusing anyone. Binsaigo roop daykhai sabh dunee-aa — outward looks will fade, as the whole world watches.

He offers this as freeing news. If looks were where our worth came from, we would all lose our worth over time. Since they are not, our real worth is safe.

Think of a favorite grandparent. Their face gets wrinkles, and you love them just the same, maybe more. Real worth rests in what lasts: the heart turned toward the One, which this shabad keeps coming back to.

A Question to Sit With

If your worth doesn't come from how you look, where do you think it truly comes from?
