Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I have passed through so many homes, so many forms, before arriving as I am now. Looking back on all that wandering, I feel how long the journey has been — and how ready I am, now, to simply rest in the One.
Kabir has lived in many homes, and now he looks at this one life.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Aisay ghar ham bahut basaa-ay — I have lived in many homes like these. Jab ham raam garabh ho-ay aa-ay — before I came, O Lord, into the garabh, the womb, this time. The heart feels how long the journey has been.
The mood is not fear of being born again. It is tiredness turning into readiness. Think of coming home after a very long trip. You drop your bag and feel how good it is to be home. After all the wandering, the heart longs to come home to the One. The last verse will ask for that grace.
Have you ever felt, after a long or tiring stretch, that you were finally ready to just rest?
