Verse 4 of 6

What You Grow Inside Goes With You Everywhere

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਰਸ ਤਪੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਾਸੀ ॥
bahut baras tap kee-aa kaasee.
For many years, I practiced penance and intense meditation at Kaashi;
ਮਰਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਮਗਹਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਸੀ ॥੩॥
maran bha-i-aa maghar kee baasee. ||3||
now that my time to die has come, I have come to dwell at Magahar! ||3||

In plain words

For years and years I practiced and prayed in the famous holy city — and now, as my time comes, here I am, settling in the town they warned me about. And I am not afraid.

What you have truly cultivated inside you goes with you everywhere — no location can take it away.
The deeper layer

The good you grow inside goes with you wherever you go.

Bahut baras tap kee-aa kaasee — for many years I did tap, deep spiritual practice, in Kaashi. Maran bha-i-aa maghar kee baasee — now, as death comes, I live in Magahar. Kabir points to the irony. A whole life of devotion in the city said to save you, and then a chosen death in the town said to curse you.

The point is not that his years of practice were wasted. It is that their fruit travels with him. It does not stay behind in a place. Think of what you learn at school. When your family moves to a new town, you do not leave your reading behind. It comes with you, because it is inside you.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you carry inside you that no place could add or remove?
