The Saddest Miss Is Never Turning Toward Love

ਜਿਹ ਨਰ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਹਿ ਸਾਧੀ ॥

That man who has not practiced devotional worship of the Lord

janmat kas na mu-o apraaDhee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
- why didn't such a sinful man die at birth? ||1||Pause||

In plain words

A person who never once turns toward loving the One —

what a loss, right from the very start! That life has missed its truest purpose.

The saddest thing to miss in a whole life is ever turning it toward love.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o. It is the center of the whole shabad, the line to come back to.

Kabir says the saddest thing to miss is love for the One. Raam bhagat means loving devotion to the One. His words are sharp again, even shocking, about a life that never turns that way. That is Kabir's way of saying: this is no small thing to miss.

Think of someone given a guitar who never once plays it. The guitar is fine. But the music it was made for never happens. A life that never turns toward love has missed the song it was made for.

A Question to Sit With

What would you most not want to go your whole life without discovering?
