Verse 3 of 5

Wisdom Comes to Those Who Find the Word Sweet

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan gur sabad hai meethaa.
Spiritual wisdom and meditation come to those unto whom the Word of the Guru's Shabad is sweet.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਚਖਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੨॥
gur kirpaa tay kinai virlai chakh deethaa. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, a few have tasted, and seen it. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Wisdom and deep stillness come to those who find the Word sweet. By grace, a few have actually tasted it and seen.

Wisdom comes to those who find the Word sweet -- and only a few, by grace, have tasted it.
The deeper layer

The condition for wisdom and meditation is that the Word is sweet to you -- love precedes understanding. And only a few, by grace, have tasted -- realization is experiential and given, not earned by study.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you only understood after you came to love it?
