Craving and Pride Quietly Crowd Out Peace

tarisnaa tarikhaa bhookh bharam laagee hirdai naahi beechaari-o ray.
The thirst of desire and the hunger of doubt afflict you; you do not contemplate the Lord in your heart.
ਉਨਮਤ ਮਾਨ ਹਿਰਿਓ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਧਾਰਿਓ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
unmat maan hiri-o man maahee gur kaa sabad na Dhaari-o ray. ||2||
Intoxicated with pride, you cheat yourself; you have not enshrined the Word of the Guru's Shabad within your mind. ||2||

In plain words

When craving and restlessness and worry take over, it gets hard to keep the One in your heart.

And when pride swells up, it can quietly fool you into losing your way. The steadying wisdom of a good teaching helps you find the path again.

Craving and pride quietly crowd out peace — a steadying wisdom helps you find your way back.
The deeper layer

Craving, worry, and pride can crowd the One right out of the heart.

Kabir names the inner weather that does this. Tarisnaa tarikhaa is the thirst of wanting more. Bhookh bharam is the hunger of doubt, a restless worry. With all that going on, hirdai naahi beechaari-o ray — the heart does not stop to think of the One.

Then comes maan, pride. Unmat maan hiri-o man maahee — carried away by pride, the mind robs itself. It is like a room so noisy that you cannot hear a friend calling your name.

The cure Kabir names is gur kaa sabad, the Guru's Word, a steadying teaching to hold inside. Being fooled by pride is not a crime. It is a condition that can heal.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind gets crowded and restless, what wise words or practices help you settle again?
