I have wandered in doubt and confusion, through birth and reincarnation; now, I am so tired. I am suffering in pain and wasting away.

Says Kabir, meeting with the Guru, I have obtained supreme joy; my love and devotion have saved me. ||4||1||5||56||

In plain words

After a long time of wandering and searching, weary and worn, a heart can finally come to rest.

Kabir says: meeting the true Guide, I found the deepest joy of all; it was love and devotion that carried me safely home.

In the end it is not our striving but love and devotion that carry us home.
The deeper layer

Effort could not carry us home. Love did.

Dhaavat jon janam bharam thaakay — running from life to life, lost in confusion, I got tired. Kabir is worn out from a long search. Then the rest comes.

Kahi kabeer gur milat mahaa ras — Kabir says, meeting the Guru, I found the greatest joy. Paraym bhagat nistaari-o ray — love and bhagat, heartfelt devotion, carried me across.

Remember how the shabad began, with all that striving and pride? That could not get us across. Think of a lost child who stops running in circles. A parent finds them and carries them home. That is how the shabad ends: not by effort, but by love.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time when love, more than effort, was what truly carried you through?
