Freedom Isn't Bought by Motions but Grows From Love

There are so many holy shrines in which to bathe, O crazy mind, and so many gods to worship.

Says Kabir, you shall not be saved like this, O crazy mind; only by serving the Lord will you find release. ||4||1||6||57||

In plain words

There are countless holy rivers to bathe in and countless ways people reach for the sacred, restless mind.

Says Kabir: freedom doesn't come from the outward motions alone — it comes from serving the One with a whole heart. Let your love, not just your feet, carry you to the water.

Freedom isn't bought by going through the motions — it grows from a whole-hearted love.
The deeper layer

Kabir closes the trap-shabad by turning to spiritual life itself. His point is not against pilgrimage or worship — it is against mistaking the outward form for the inner reality, a critique that applies equally to every tradition's rituals. You can visit every shrine and still stay caught in the monkey's fist if the heart isn't in it. Har kee sayv — "serving the One" — means loving, humble devotion that reshapes how you live, not a transaction that buys release. This is Kabir's steady theme: reality over performance.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between doing something because you have to and doing it because you mean it?
