Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I have tasted the sweetness of the One.
Beside that taste, every other flavor I used to chase has quietly faded.
Taste the sweetness of the One, and lesser tastes lose their pull.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Raam ras pee-aa ray — I have drunk the ras of the One. Ras means sweet taste or juice. It is something to enjoy, not something to put up with.
Jih ras bisar ga-ay ras a-or — with this taste, all other tastes are forgotten.
Kabir is not saying other joys are forbidden. They simply fade because something sweeter has come. Think of fresh mango after a week of stale crackers. You do not have to force yourself to stop eating crackers. You just stop wanting them.
This is a joy so full that it outshines the rest.
Has a really good, deep joy ever made a smaller thrill seem less important?
