Ask Not Just for Relief but to Be Filled With Love

ਮੇਰੀ ਹਰਹੁ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਜਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
mayree harahu bipat jan karahu subhaa-ee.
Take away my pains, and bless Your humble servant with Your Sublime Love.
ਚਰਣ ਨ ਛਾਡਉ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਲ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
charan na chhaada-o sareer kal jaa-ee. ||2||
I shall not leave Your Feet, even though my body may perish. ||2||

In plain words

Lift away my troubles, and fill me instead with Your gentle love.

I will not let go of You — not even if everything else falls away.

Ask not just for troubles to lift, but to be filled with love — and hold on through anything.
The deeper layer

Ravidas asks for more than relief. He asks to be filled with love.

He asks for two things. First, mayree harahu bipat — take away my troubles. Second, fill me with Your subhaa-ee, natural, sweet love. The second is the deeper wish. Comfort is good. But being soaked in love is what he really wants.

Then comes his promise: "I will not let go of Your feet, even if this body wears away." Holding someone's feet is an old way of showing deep love and trust. These are words of total loyalty: whatever happens, I hold on to You. Think of a best friend who sticks by you on your worst day, not only your best. His love does not wait for things to get better first.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you'd hold onto no matter what else changed around you?
