The Name Is the Soil a Good Life Grows In

khaytee vanaj naavai kee ot.
My farming and my trading are by the Support of the Name.
paap punn beej kee pot.
The seeds of sin and virtue are bound together.
kaam kroDh jee-a meh chot.
Sexual desire and anger are the wounds of the soul.
naam visaar chalay man khot. ||2||
The evil-minded ones forget the Naam, and then depart. ||2||

In plain words

My work, my trade, all of it grows out of the Name. Good and bad seeds are planted together in this life. Craving and anger leave wounds on the soul. People who forget the Name carry those wounds, and then they are gone.

Craving and anger leave wounds -- the Name is the soil in which a good life actually grows.
The deeper layer

Nanak, a merchant's son, uses farming and trade as images for a life's labor -- fruitful only when rooted in the Name. Sin and virtue are sown together; desire and anger (two of the panch vikaar) are named as sores, wounds on the soul. Forgetting the Name is not punished from outside; it simply leaves the wounds untreated.

A Question to Sit With

What "seeds" are you planting lately -- and what do you think they will grow into?
