Verse 5 of 5

One Heart Holds the Passions and the Light

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੜਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
hukam sanjogee garh das du-aar.
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the castle of the body has ten gates.
ਪੰਚ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
panch vaseh mil jot apaar.
The five passions dwell there, together with the Divine Light of the Infinite.
ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰ ॥
aap tulai aapay vanjaar.
The Lord Himself is the merchandise, and He Himself is the trader.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak naam savaaranhaar. ||4||5||
O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, we are adorned and rejuvenated. ||4||5||

In plain words

By the flow of life, the body is built like a castle with ten gates. Inside live the five wild passions -- and right there with them, the endless Light. The One is both the treasure being traded and the trader doing the trading. And through the Name, you are made new and beautiful.

The same heart holds the five wild passions and the endless Light -- the Name makes it new.
The deeper layer

The body-castle has ten gates (the nine plus the Tenth, as in the earlier shabad). What dwells inside is striking: the five passions and the infinite Light together -- the human is a mixed dwelling, not a pure one. The image reads as a non-dual seal: the One is both the trader and the merchandise, with no second party to the transaction. The Name renews -- it adorns and makes new.

A Question to Sit With

Can you feel both the "wild passions" and something quieter and brighter living in you at once?
