O Lord God, please unite me with the Holy Guru, so that I might joyfully grind and eat the Shabad.

Servant Nanak is the slave of the Guru; in the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, the bitter becomes sweet. ||4||9||23||61||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O One, join me with the holy teacher, so I can grind the Word like grain and live on it. I am the teacher's servant -- and in the company of the holy, even what was bitter turns sweet.
In true company, even what was bitter turns sweet.
The close: a homely image -- grinding and eating the Shabad like daily flour (the Word as staple food). And the transforming power of Sangat: the bitter becomes sweet -- the company the hardened heart of the previous verse lacked. What milk could not do to the snake, the Sangat does to the soul.
A Question to Sit With
Has the right company ever made something hard become bearable, even sweet?
