Houses and Mansions Hold No Real Happiness

ਕੁਸਲੁ ਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kusal na garihi mayree sabh maa-i-aa.
There is no happiness in owning one's own home, in all of Maya,
ਊਚੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
oochay mandar sundar chhaa-i-aa.
or in lofty mansions casting beautiful shadows.
ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jhoothay laalach janam gavaa-i-aa. ||1||
In fraud and greed, this human life is being wasted. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

There is no real happiness in owning your house, in all the world's stuff, in tall mansions with beautiful shadows. Spent on cheating and greed, a human life is simply wasted.

Houses, possessions, and mansions hold no real happiness.
The deeper layer

Owning a home and lots of things does not bring real happiness.

This is the first wrong answer. Kusal na garihi mayree sabh maa-i-aa — there is no happiness in owning a home, or in all of Maya, the world's stuff. Not even in oochay mandar, tall mansions that cast beautiful shade.

Worse still, jhoothay laalach janam gavaa-i-aa — a life spent on cheating and greed is wasted. Think of someone who keeps buying the newest phone, sure the next one will finally make them happy. The happiness never arrives. Wealth is not the same as happiness.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten something you wanted and found the happiness didn't last?
