Verse 3 of 5

The Light That Holds the Worlds Is Lit in You

ਜਿਨਿ ਧਾਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਰਣਿ ਅਗਾਸ ॥
jin Dhaaray baho Dharan agaas.
He established the many worlds and skies.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥
jaa kee jot jee-a pargaas.
The soul is illumined with His Light;
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਖਸ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
jaa kee bakhas na maytai ko-ay.
no one can revoke His Blessing.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
simar simar parabh nirbha-o ho-ay. ||2||
Meditate, meditate in remembrance on God, and become fearless. ||2||

In plain words

The One set the many worlds and skies in place. Every soul is lit by that same Light.

No one can cancel the blessing the One gives. So hold it, hold it in mind — and become fearless.

The Light that holds up the worlds is the same Light lit inside you; a blessing given cannot be erased.
The deeper layer

The same Light that holds up all the worlds is shining inside you.

The shabad began with the One who protects the unprotected. Now the view grows huge. That same One Dhaaray — holds up — the many worlds and skies. Then it comes right back close. Jaa kee jot jee-a pargaas: that Light is what lights up your own soul. It is like one power station lighting a whole city, down to the lamp by your bed.

Jaa kee bakhas na maytai ko-ay — no one can erase the One's blessing. That is very comforting. Once grace is given, no one's judgment can take it back. The result is nirbha-o, fearless. Fearless is one of the qualities named in the Mool Mantar, the opening words of all of Gurbani, the Guru's Word.

A Question to Sit With

If the same light were shining in every person you meet today, how might you treat them?
