Live It Before You Teach It

ਉਧਰਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

You shall be redeemed, and through you, the whole world shall be saved,

In plain words

Live this, and you lift yourself — and through you, the whole world is lifted a little too. Keep the Name of the One-and-Only in mind.

Practice it yourself first, and then share it with others; let the Name settle deep into your heart.

Change yourself first, and the good ripples outward — live it before you teach it.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says: live it yourself first, then share it, and the good will spread from you to the world.

uDhrahi aap tarai sansaar — you are lifted up, and the whole world is carried across with you. That is a big claim. One person's inner change ripples outward, like a stone dropped in a pond. It all rests on aykankaar, the One and Only, the same One named in Ik Onkar.

The order in the next line matters, and it is very practical. Aap kamaa-o avraa updays — practice it yourself, then teach others. Earn it in your own life before you offer it. Living it comes before telling it.

And the Name is to be hirdai parvays, let in to live in the heart, not only on the lips. Think of a coach who actually does the drills with the team. Everyone listens to that coach.

A Question to Sit With

Why is it easier to trust advice from someone who actually lives it?
