Verse 3 of 5

Wisdom And Refuge In One Teacher

ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
gur mayraa gi-aan gur ridai Dhi-aan.
The Guru is my spiritual wisdom, the Guru is the meditation within my heart.
ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪਾਲੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥
gur gopaal purakh bhagvaan.
The Guru is the Lord of the World, the Primal Being, the Lord God.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਰਹਉ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ॥
gur kee saran raha-o kar jor.
With my palms pressed together, I remain in the Guru's Sanctuary.
ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ॥੨॥
guroo binaa mai naahee hor. ||2||
Without the Guru, I have no other at all. ||2||

In plain words

The teaching is my wisdom and the quiet meditation within my heart.

With my hands gently joined, I rest in its shelter — for I have no other.

The teaching can be both your understanding and your resting place.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says the Guru is both what he knows and where he rests.

Gur mayraa gi-aan gur ridai Dhi-aan — the Guru is my gi-aan, my understanding, and the Dhi-aan, the quiet focus, in my heart. Gur gopaal purakh bhagvaan — the Guru is the Lord of the world, the first Being, the Blessed One.

Gur kee saran raha-o kar jor — I stay in the Guru's shelter with my palms joined. Kar jor, joined hands, is the posture of trust. Raha-o, I remain, shows a heart that has stopped looking elsewhere. Think of a kid who finally finds the perfect reading nook and curls up there. Then comes guroo binaa mai naahee hor — without the Guru, I have no other.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that is both wise counsel and a comfort to you?
