Verse 3 of 5

The Grip of Illusion Loosens

ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
naaraa-in man maahi aDhaar.
Within my mind is the Support of the Lord.
ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
naaraa-in bohith sansaar.
The Lord is the boat to cross over the world-ocean.
ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਕਹਤ ਜਮੁ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਲਾਇਣ ॥
naaraa-in kahat jam bhaag palaa-in.
Chant the Lord's Name, and the Messenger of Death will run away.
ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਦੰਤ ਭਾਨੇ ਡਾਇਣ ॥੨॥
naaraa-in dant bhaanay daa-in. ||2||
The Lord breaks the teeth of Maya, the witch. ||2||

In plain words

The One is the support that holds up my mind.

The One is the boat across the wide world-ocean.

Holding the One in mind, even the fear of death runs the other way.

And the tight grip of illusion simply loosens and lets go.

Lean on the One, and the tight grip of illusion simply loosens.
The deeper layer

Naaraa-in man maahi adhaar — the One is the support the mind leans on. The line about the messenger of death 'fleeing' (jam bhaag palaa-in) is rendered gently — even the fear of death runs off. The vivid literal image of the One 'breaking the teeth of Maya the witch' is reframed away from a frightening figure into what it means: the grip of illusion loosens — the pull of appearances loses its hold on you.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that once had a big grip on you that has loosened over time?
