Everyone Is In Love With The Same Fleeting Thing

ਏਕ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
ayk suhaagan jagat pi-aaree.
The world loves only the one bride, Maya.
ਸਗਲੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saglay jee-a jant kee naaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
She is the wife of all beings and creatures. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Almost everyone alive is a little in love with this same fleeting thing.

It belongs to no one and promises itself to all — that's exactly its trick.

Maya makes everyone feel it's theirs, while it truly belongs to no one.
The deeper layer

The rahau: ayk suhaagan jagat pi-aaree — one beloved that the whole world adores; saglay jee-a jant kee naaree — belonging to every creature. Kabir names the strange spell of Maya: it makes each person feel it's theirs, while it belongs to no one. Seeing the trick is the first loosening of it.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think the same shiny things pull at almost everyone the same way?
